The broad middle band of a classical entablature, between the architrave below and the cornice above, often plain or decorated with relief.

Structural & construction notes

In the Doric order the frieze alternates triglyphs and metopes; Ionic and Corinthian friezes may carry continuous sculpture. In interiors the term also describes a decorative band below a ceiling.
