Definition

One of the three principal Greek orders, recognised by its slender fluted shaft, moulded base, and a capital with twin spiral scrolls called volutes.

Structural & construction notes

Ionic columns are typically about nine diameters tall, more slender than Doric. The volutes need careful setting-out, and corner capitals are often turned to read on two faces. The entablature usually carries a continuous frieze.
